Responsible Betting Strategy

Today we are going to focus on Bankroll Management - the total amount of money you are comfortable losing without any negative effects on your financial outlook. For new bettors, this should be calculated monthly and represent a conservative amount of your overall budget. Your bankroll should be a percentage of your disposable income, not a concrete amount. Every month is different, and sometimes your bankroll will need to fluctuate based on your life’s circumstances. Part of a responsible strategy is flexibility, both in your dollars wagered and wagers selected.

Choose a Budget and Stick to it

When allotting your monthly bankroll, start conservatively to reduce emotional attachment. Sports betting is an emotional game, and we try our best to limit how much our feelings impact wagers and their sizes. Every situation is different, and the key is making sure to not blow through your entire monthly budget because the big game of the night is coming up. If you make wagers daily, consider how much of your monthly budget is taken by each wager. 5 wagers, each comprising 1% of your bankroll, will still use up your entire budget with 10 days to spare in the month. Budgeting is an active task - not just a number to pick and ignore.

Know When to Quit

Losses are inevitable. Some days your picks simply don’t work out because athletes are human beings and can only be so accurately predicted. After a series of losses, the best thing you can do is tune out for the night. It can be hard to realize in the moment, but we all know the feeling with hindsight. If you find yourself on a cold streak, try removing yourself from the situation entirely. Playing to combat your losses is a great way to compound your losses and burn through your bankroll, setting yourself up for further losses.

Increase With Caution

If you find yourself consistently winning (like we do at WagerLens!), perhaps you can increase your bankroll percentage and make larger baseline bets. We strongly encourage caution in these circumstances. Losses will always come, and raising the stakes opens the door for chasing losses irresponsibly. Just because you were up big in one month does not mean you should expect a further increase.

WagerLens Accomplishments

Yesterday we hit a HUGE 4 leg MLB parlay, further demonstrating the efficacy of our data-based approach to betting. Parlays will always be volatile and unreliable, but our resources will push the odds more in your favor.

In addition to our parlay hit, we also wanted to highlight our lifetime statistics! We are above a 50% hit rate in our MLB and NBA picks, putting us up a total of 33 units on NBA specifically. The numbers may not jump off the page, but anyone who modeled our newsletter picks since its inception would be looking at success and profit. We take a measured approach at WagerLens, provided bettors with incremental wins that build over time. As our sample size increases for MLB, look for more evidence of our successes!

With MLB in full swing, and the NBA and NHL starting the first round of their respective playoffs this week, the daily slate of games can be overwhelming. We wanted to highlight the most exciting upcoming matchups from each league, simply to keep our readers informed! Not everyone follows every league, and we always want to cultivate interest for new sports fans.

Phillies at Cubs

From our perspective, this is the series of the weekend. Games at Wrigley feature tons of offense due to it being the size of a large shoebox, and both these teams can mash. Philly is known for their policy of playing offense and nothing else, while the Cubs are looking sneakily competent beginning their second season under star manager Craig Counsell. At least one of these games looks to be a very entertaining shootout.

Blue Jays at Yankees

The top divisional matchup of the weekend features Aaron Judge vs. the world yet again. The man simply looks unstoppable, and Toronto’s pitching is not exactly stout. Combine those factors with a home weekend at a sure to be packed Yankee Stadium, and we’re due for an exciting weekend in the AL East.

Rangers at Giants

This one is sneaky, but both teams are off to a good start. San Francisco is third in their division but playing quite well, while the Rangers have landed in first largely by attrition. We view this matchup as unlikely for fireworks, but very likely to give us quality baseball throughout. As a company of baseball men, these games would be great for a calm spring afternoon.

Lakers at Timberwolves

While every NBA playoff series will be active this weekend, we wanted to spotlight this matchup in the West. LA has been surprisingly lethargic through 2 games, and they are fortunate to have rallied for a victory to earn the split at home. Anthony Edwards and the Wolves are known for their ferocity, so look for them to come out hot in their next matchup on Friday. Make sure to be ready by tipoff to catch every second of the action.
