📊 Quick Stats to Know

  • The SEC has a record 14 teams in the tournament this season, shattering the previous mark of 11.

  • Since 1978, no NCAA champion has not also won a game in their conference tournament. Be wary of UCLA, Texas A&M, and Georgia.

  • Teams that began the season unranked but entered the tournament as a 1 or 2 seed historically underperform. Look to target Michigan State and St. John’s for early upset potential.

  • Team that lead at halftime are strong candidates to cover the spread. Since 2018, second half leaders cover the second half spread 58% of the time.

💎This Year’s Cinderella?

  • Colorado State (12 seed) has become a popular pick for a first round upset, taking on 5 seed Memphis. CSU’s KENPOM Rating of 42 demands putting respect on this organization, and their offensive prowess hits the levels needed to power a tournament run.

  • Our next team to watch is High Point University (13 seed). They are a very lopsided team, relying heavily on their offensive onslaught. Their matchup against Purdue (4 seed) does not strike fear into the heart of the WagerLens team due to Purdue’s lackluster Big Ten Tournament appearance and their inconsistency throughout the season. They are vulnerable and we expect HPU to come out swinging. A run for High Point is unlikely due to their imbalance, but a first round win is very possible.

  • McNeese State (12 seed) brings an extremely experienced and balanced lineup to the tournament for a second consecutive year. They face off against Clemson (5 seed), who come from a weakened ACC that does not scare off anyone. McNeese will have a tough time keeping up with Power 5 size, but their depth will allow them to run at a higher intensity for longer. Look for this game to stay close throughout.

  • As always in March, beware the 12 seed. This year’s tournament features better 12 seeds than ever before, and the odds of all the 5 seeds surviving the first round look very low.

🎯Upset Alert!

  • Iowa State (3 seed) will be without Keshon Gilbert, one of their stars, for the tournament. Be sure to factor that in, along with other injury news, when placing your bets.

  • The Big Ten has suffered early losses with consistency in the last several years of the tournament, and the conference is generally viewed at a lower quality than previous seasons. Look out for Illinois, Purdue, and Oregon.

  • The SEC’s heavy presence in the tournament means they have plenty of teams coming in at higher seeds. Teams such as Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas are all middle of the pack, but enter the tournament as veterans of the best conference.

  • Finally, a few other matchups we think can cover the spread, even if the upset doesn’t hit (spreads not listed due to the primer being written several days before play begins)

    1. VCU v BYU

    2. Drake v Missouri

🎯Who will win it all?

  • National champions historically provide a balanced approach. No team is perfect, but March Madness has a special way of exposing teams’ flaws over time. Your team may escape the first two rounds with poor 3-point shooting, but superior teams that survive the first weekend of games will be prepared to exploit the weaknesses of imbalanced squads.

  • Upsets always happen, but top seeded teams are usually the best bets. Don’t hesitate to choose 1 and 2 seeds to cover and advance.

  • Of the top teams, we see Duke, Florida, and Alabama as the best title contenders.

  • Outside of the 1 and 2 seeds, watch out for Maryland and Texas Tech.
